Honor Magic 2 Pre-orders Exceeded 2.3 Lakhs, Sold Out Within 5 Minutes on JingDong Mall in China

In an era when most smartphone users are on the fence about notched displays, a handful of Chinese smartphone makers have taken another approach. The idea is to hide the selfie cameras when they are not being used to increase screen estate.

While the OPPO Find X (review) and Vivo Nex (review) feature motorized sliders, the recently unveiled Honor Magic 2 sports a manual slider that’s being called the butterfly five-track sliding system. The phone is quite a looker, and apart from wireless charging support, it offers everything you would expect from a 2018 flagship. Perhaps, that’s why it sold out within minutes of its arrival on China’s JingDong Mall.

Honor Magic 2 Disappears Within 5 Minutes

The newly launched Honor Magic 2 recently went live on JindDong Mall, which is China’s largest retailer. Within 5 minutes, the initial stock of 2,30,000 was wiped out, which means the phone can no longer be pre-ordered on the website. However, Honor is apparently actively working to replenish the stock, so it remains to be seen if it will be back online before the release date.

It is not all that surprising that the phone sold out so quickly. The Honor Magic 2 is fueled by the 7nm Kirin 980 processor that powers the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro. It has six cameras in total and also includes an in-display fingerprint sensor. The phone offers up to 512GB of storage, although, that variant will not be available until next month.

Despite offering a sleek design and top of the line specifications, Honor is not charging an arm and leg for the device. Its price is nearly half that of the other premium phones on the market, such as Samsung Note 9 (review), iPhone XS Max, and Google Pixel 3 (review). For the base variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard memory, you will have to cough up INR 40,194, the 8GB RAM and 128GB storage variant will set you back INR 45,485, and the model with 8GB of RAM and 356GB of internal storage will cost you INR 50,775. The maxed out variant with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of onboard memory is pitched at INR 61,355. The phone features an iridescent design and is offered in three colors: gradient black, gradient red, and gradient blue.

The Honor Magic 2 will be released in China on November 6. Unlike the original Honor Magic phone, its successor will be available in other countries as well. However, Honor hasn’t mentioned a date so far, so we will have to wait for an announcement.

Honor Magic 2 Has An Unrivaled Camera Setup

The phone has a 6.39-inch AMOLED display with a screen-to-body ratio of nearly 100 percent. Under the hood, you have the Kirin 980 SoC, which, in addition to blazing fast performance, will also provide the AI smarts. The phone also has the proprietary Yoyo virtual assistant with machine-learning capabilities to predict user behavior.

Honor Magic is also the only phone in the market to have six cameras in total. On the front, there is a 16MP primary sensor, a 2MP depth sensor for portraits, and another 2MP lens to help with 3D face unlocking. The rear camera system consists of one 24MP sensor and two 16MP lenses. The 3500mAh battery coupled with 40W fast charging would ensure that you don’t run out of juice in the middle of the day.
