Samsung W2019 Clamshell Android Phone Launch Set for November 9, Might Skip 3.5mm Jack

We have been hearing a lot about Samsung’s upcoming flip-phone, the W2019 in several leaked images of late. This new smartphone which is expected to succeed its predecessor – the W2018 is exclusive for the Chinese market. Anyway, the reason we are talking about the W2019 today is due to the fact that we now know that this device will be officially launched in China later this month.

Samsung W2019: Launch date in China

According to our friends over at Sammobile, Samsung has confirmed that they will launch the SM-W2019 flip phone in China on November 9– a little over a week from today. The company has reportedly started to send out invitations to bloggers and media for the launch event. From what is currently known, the launch event for the W2019 will take place in the city of Wuxi, located close to Shanghai in eastern China.

Samsung W2019: What we know so far

The Samsung W2019 is the latest model from Samsung’s W-Series line up for China. Predecessors of the W2019 include the W2018 and the W2017 all of which happened to be premium, flagship grade flip phones. Chances are quite high that not many people outside of China knew that Samsung made clamshell/flip phones in 2018. The Chinese market apart from being the world’s largest market for smartphones also happens to be a very diverse playing field. Except for Japan, this is probably the only market in Asia that seems to have an affinity for clamshell designs.

As far as the design goes, what we know currently is that the W2019 will closely resemble its predecessor. That said, recent leaks have pointed towards the possibility of the W2019 not getting a 3.5mm audio jack.

Samsung W2019: Specifications, features

As expected of a flagship-grade device, the W2019 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset (and not Samsung’s own Exynos chip). Like its predecessor, the W2019 is expected to come with at least 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The device is also likely to get a microSD card slot for expanding the memory. The W2019 will also get two Super AMOLED displays, each measuring nearly 4.2-inches across with full HD resolution. As for the camera, current rumors indicate that the device will feature a dual camera set up at the rear with a 12-megapixel primary sensor. The primary camera is also likely to feature dual aperture modes as seen on other Samsung flagships. The front-facing camera is also likely to see an upgrade, although, we do not know the specifics yet. The camera app is also likely to get a bunch of AI features including a scene optimizer.

At launch, the SM-W2019 is also likely to run Android 9 underneath Samsung’s own custom UI. That said, the device will not come with Google Services since the product is exclusively designed for the Chinese market.

As far as the pricing the device is concerned, it is a given that the new W2019 will be priced well above the $1000 mark in China. To give you an idea of what to expect, the older model, the W2018 was launched in China with a price tag of 15,999 Yuan which roughly translates to $2,300. That makes the older W2018 more expensive than even the iPhone. That being said, the fact that Samsung continues to make these premium devices is a clear indication that there is enough demand from the Chinese consumer for these premium flip phones.
