JioPhone, Jio Phone 2 Users Can Now Download ZEE5 App and Watch Live TV Channels, Movies

Reliance JioPhone is one of the best feature phones that you can get on the market. The KaiOS-powered JioPhone is more than just a feature phone as it supports a slew of apps including Facebook, WhatsApp, and others. Now, the latest app that has become compatible with the phone is ZEE5. The streaming app is aiming at tapping the rural audience with this move.

JioPhone Now Supports ZEE5 App

The ZEE5 app will now be catering to over 40 million JioPhone and JioPhone 2 users all across India. Commenting on the availability, EE5’s India head Tarun Katial said, “We are focused on bridging the digital entertainment divide between metros, semi-urban and rural markets.” The ZEE5 app currently streams shows, music videos, and movies in different regional languages.

To recall, ZEE5 and Jio already had a deal that enabled the latter to stream ZEE5’s content on its native apps such as JioCinema and JioTV. JioPhone attained the capability of running apps such as YouTube alongside Facebook and WhatsApp, back in August 2018. Even though ZEE5’s content was already available via Jio’s native apps, it would still be a beneficial move to have a standalone app. Moreover, the focus is on serving regional content that is limited to ZEE5’s app. ZEE media claims its OTT app to be the only one to stream content in over six regional languages. We can expect it to become available on Jio Store soon.

Back in December 2018, ZEE5 claimed to have 56.3 million monthly active users spending an average of 31 minutes on the app daily.

Experiencing Streaming Service On Small Screen JioPhone

In order to run on JioPhone that is strapped with certain limitations as it is a feature phone, ZEE has optimized its app to run seamlessly on the device. Now, with high-speed internet connectivity promised by Jio across India, JioPhone users should be able to stream their favorite show, music video, or a movie in a preferred language. The JioPhone features a 2.4-inch TFT screen, which is not an ideal size for mobile entertainment. However, for the ones who are in no mood to spend moolah on getting a phone with a larger display, even a small screen would serve the purpose.

The JioPhone rules the top spot in the feature phone segment. Its shipments in Q4 2017, made it trump Samsung. Reliance JioPhone boasts a 38% share of the feature phone market. According to reports, KaiOS-powered devices make for around 100 million Jio subscribers since 2017.

We already know that Reliance is in talks with an unspecified Chinese manufacturer for 5G-enabled handsets. The telco is planning to deploy 5G services all across India soon. These 5G-enabled phones will not be feature phones but decent touch-screen phones.
