Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the 21-day lockdown across India to thwart the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) threat that is wreaking havoc across the world, Indian e-commerce giants made significant announcements. India’s largest e-commerce company Flipkart has confirmed that it will suspend all operations during the 21-day lockdown period. The Flipkart website and mobile app now redirect to a static page with an announcement stating the same.
Flipkart’s archrival Amazon India has also announced a similar move and has confirmed that it has suspended the sale and deliveries of all other goods. Amazon will, however, continue to take orders and ship products that they have categorized as critical. These include Household Staples, Packaged Food, Health Care, Hygiene, Personal safety, and other high priority products. The company has confirmed that all other orders currently stand disabled. For orders that are still pending, customers will have the choice to cancel them and receive a full refund for all the items (if paid already).
These changes remain effective starting today, March 24, 2020, and will most likely continue for the entire duration of the lockdown. While Amazon’s official statement does say that the delivery on essential items will continue, many people have confirmed that they have faced issues placing orders for even items categorized as essentials. There have been several instances of delivery personnel being harassed by police officials while performing deliveries.
Meanwhile, Big Bazaar, one of India’s largest retail chains, has announced a large scale home delivery program across various cities. Currently, the cities where Big Bazaar will home deliver essentials include Mumbai, Pune, NCR, Kolkata, Bengaluru.
