When Pete Lau left his position as vice-president of Oppo to build his own legacy in the form of OnePlus, it was the customers who ended up benefitting the most. In an attempt to follow in the same footsteps, Sky Li, the most recent VP of Oppo has effectively resigned from his post. He now intends to lead his own charge by taking the role of CEO of Realme. This means Realme will no longer be a part of Oppo and will function independently to challenge the smartphone market withal new bang-for-your-buck offerings.
Realme: The New OnePlus
According to a letter sent by Sky Li to Realme employees, the idea of separating from Oppo came about by the end of last year. In this letter, Li goes on to say, “Before leaving Oppo officially, I’ve been in charge of OPPO’s global overseas market during these past few years, leading OPPO to grow from the business available in 3 markets to one that covers 31 countries and regions. The overwhelming response and trust from the young generation is something that has encouraged me to launch the new brand Realme.”
It is difficult not to compare Li’s success to Pete Lau’s as he also contributed to Oppo’s success before he left to work on OnePlus. Most notably, its Lau’s work with CyanogenMod which helped him develop smartphones for Oppo, and eventually implement what he learned into the first OnePlus devices to make them more affordable. Li seems to be pursuing the same course of action based on the widespread positive reception of the Realme 1.
On The Heels of the Success of Realme 1
Li has certainly led the Oppo India team quite successfully before with the Realme 1. There is no doubt the immense success of that device is what gave Li the confidence to pursue this journey by himself. The Realme 1 was recently announced to have hit the 4 Lacks units sold mark ever since it launched. Furthermore, the device has retained the bestseller ranking on Amazon for the last two months. It even retains one of the highest ranking on the website in India with a 4.4 star rating. Even in our comparisons, the phone has mostly gotten the upper hand compared to other budget smartphones we usually pit it against.
Realme’s “India-First” Initiative
The most exciting part of Li’s endeavour is his plans to adopt an
“India-first approach”. Yes, the phones manufactured by Realme will initially be focused on making Indian customers happy, and then follow up with global launches. This makes sense given how the Realme 1 was received here, and other such value offerings are likely to garner similar respect from this community.
Furthermore, we expect Realme to be working on smartphones that will be priced up to the Rs.20,000 mark. Given that the current flagship-killer champion (the OnePlus 6) has its price starting from Rs. 34,999, we don’t expect Realme to compete for this spot just yet. It is likely that the new company will begin by focussing on the mid-range and upper mid-range market to compete with the likes of Honor and Vivo. Of course, there will be Oppo offerings to contend with here as well.
While the possible future for Realme looks bright right now, only time will tell how such a move will play out. What do you think about these new developments? Let us know down in the comments.
