Google Pixel 3 XL Cleary White Hands-On Images Leaks; Reveals Notch, Single Rear Camera

The appearance of the Google Pixel 3 XL isn’t exactly new as we saw pictures leaked last month of the device codenamed “crosshatch”.

Pixel 3 XL has a notch

From the earlier leaks, it was confirmed that the Pixel 3 XL would have a notch in the front of the display to offer a bezel-less design, which is something we’ve seen pretty much every other OEM do in 2018. As for the other specs, the leak showed off a dual front-facing camera arrangement, a 4GB RAM, and 128GB storage model, as well as the Snapdragon 845 processor being used to power it.

The latest leak comes courtesy of the XDA forums that show off what seems to be the “Clearly White” variant of the Google Pixel 3 XL.

Pixel 3 XL: Specifications, Features

From the leaked images, the white back of the device clearly leaks through onto the sides of the Pixel 3 XL when viewed from the front showing that it is more than just a simple photoshop. The bootloader information shows that this is an EVT 1.0 model (Engineering Validation Test), which is the same as the earlier leaked model that corroborates the story that this is a leaked device. The photos also show off the 4GB of RAM that was leaked previously but also introduces a new storage variant of 64GB that show the same RAM configuration will be preserved across both storage capacities. The photos also show the front-facing speaker at the bottom of the device much more clearly than the previous leaks.

XDA reports:

Apart from that, there isn’t much more new information that can be gleaned from these photos. The real-life photos match what we see in leaked 3D CAD renders but it doesn’t confirm aspects like wireless charging or the return of the Google Pixel 2‘s Active Edge squeezable frame. We also can’t tell from these photos if the display is OLED, though given the past history of the Google Pixel and Google Pixel 2 smartphones it’s a strong possibility that the Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL will have an OLED display. According to the original poster of the photos, the rear of the device is “totally glass.” He states the “top part is glossy and the bottom is matte” but that it’s all “a single part.” He was unable to confirm if wireless charging is present, though.

Keep in mind that these photos show off an early engineering model. Given that the device is set for release in October, Google is likely past the EVT 1.0 stage in production. The company is likely at the DVT (Design Validation Test) stage where they are getting the hardware units ready for mass production. That means that aspects of these devices may have changed slightly since these EVT devices were manufactured. Furthermore, we don’t know the user who posted these photos nor how he came across them, so take these leaks with a grain of salt.

Pixel 3 XL: Software

It is important to note that the device that is pictured is an early design version so may not represent the final product of what the Google Pixel 3 XL will look like when released. However, it does provide a very good indication as to the color variant and also confirms the presence of the notch to house the front-facing sensors.

What the leak doesn’t do is explore any of the software features included with the Pixel 3 XL, which as we saw with the previous Pixel 2 XL had some very interesting an appealing “Pixel-only” features that overcame, for example, the need for dual-rear cameras. The two leaks we have seen so far also show a single rear camera array so it will be interesting to see come the September release date of the Pixel 3 XL what other goodies Google has packed into the device.
