Honor Play Poised to Disrupt Mid-range Segment with Flagship Grade Performance

Huawei sub-brand Honor recently brought out the Honor 9N smartphone for the Indian market. Priced at Rs. 11,999, the Honor 9N is aimed at the budget segment. However, it looks like Honor is not stopping its launch spree anytime soon as the company is now planning to launch the Honor Play smartphone in India. And reportedly, the Honor Play will be launched in India as an Amazon exclusive smartphone for online sales. While the phone is supposed to debut soon, we already know its specifications and features as it is already on sale in China. Going by its detailed spec sheet, we believe that the Honor Play would disrupt the mid-range segment with its top-end features that could be compared to a flagship. Let’s take a look at some of its supreme specs and features.

Honor Play: Top Flagship Grade Features

Boosting Graphics With GPU Turbo Technology and Enhancing AI with NPU

The Honor Play is the first smartphone from Huawei that is adorned with the company’s in-house GPU Turbo technology, which gives the much-needed boost to make the gaming experience seamless on the phone. In a nutshell, the GPU Turbo tech enhances or optimises the graphics performance on the phone by removing performance lags and other barriers between phone’s GPU hardware and the software running on the front. Huawei claims that its GPU Turbo tech revolutionises the conventional graphics processing framework at the downside layer of the system. Besides, the phone also includes a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to ensure seamless AI computing under the hood.

Powerful Kirin 970 Under the Hood

Another powerful specification on the Honor Play is its Kirin 970 processor that gives it power under the hood. To give it more power, Huawei has packed it with 4GB/6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Users with higher storage requirement can expand the storage further up to 256GB via microSD card.

4D Haptic Feedback for In-game Controls

The company touts the inclusion of the ‘4D’ haptic feedback on the Honor Play, which seems to be helpful for in-game actions like explosions, gunfire, collisions, etc. It offers feedback in the form of vibrations that could help improve the gameplay for the player. It’s like the impulsive trigger vibration that we have seen on the Xbox One.

Impressive Camera Setup

Although the Honor Play has been heavily promoted as a gaming smartphone, the company also included a decent camera arrangement. The Honor Play packs a 16MP+2MP dual camera setup at the rear with f/2.2 aperture and f/2.4 aperture, respectively. The rear camera also includes several AI-assisted features alongside PDAF. There is a 16MP selfie snapper on the front with f/2.0 aperture.

3D Gaming Sound With Histen Audio

Gaming also requires powerful audio, which is why Huawei has integrated the Honor Play with Histen audio technology that offers realistic 3D game sounds clubbed with 7.1 channel virtualization.

Honor Play: Other Specifications

Other specs on the Honor Play include a 6.3-inch full-HD+ notched display at 1080×2340 pixels resolution and a 19:9 aspect ratio. Connectivity options supported by the phone include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, USB Type-C, Bluetooth 4.2, and GPS. A 3750mAh battery with fast charging support completes the package.

Honor Play: Expected Price in India, Launch Date

In China, the starting price of the Honor Play for the 4GB RAM variant is CNY 1,999 (approx. Rs. 21,000) and CNY 2,399 (approx. Rs. 25,100) for the 6GB RAM variant. The phone was launched in Black, Blue, and Violet colour options.

The phone will be launched on August 6 in India. We can expect it to be priced lower than its China pricing.
