Apple Pushes Out New iOS 12.1, watchOS 5.1, macOS 10.14.1 Updates With Several New Features

Apple announced the new Macbook Air, Mac Mini, and the iPad Pro at its recent event in New York. Apart from the new hardware, the company also announced some new software updates for its products. Eligible Apple iPhones are now receiving the iOS 12.1 software update. Mac devices are receiving an update to macOS 10.14.1 Mojave, and the Apple Watch and Apple TV are getting the watchOS 5.1 and tvOS 12.1 updates. All of these update are now being delivered over the air to the respective devices. The updates brings a few new features along with bug fixes, security fixes, and system improvements.

iOS 12.1 New Features

The iOS 12.1 software update for the eligible iPhones and iPad bring a couple of new features and improvements. The main new addition is Group Facetime and Dual-SIM support for the iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, and the iPhone Xr. As mentioned earlier, the update will be available as an OTA. You can manually check for the update via Settings > Software Update.

The most important new features of the iOS 12.1 update is Group FaceTime and Dual SIM support. With Group Facetime, users can video call up to 32 people. However, this feature will not work for video calls on the iPhone 6 Plus or older, iPad mini 3 or older, and the iPad Air. The update also activates the dual SIM functionality on the newer iPhones. The phones have one physical SIM slot, and a second eSIM, which can be programmed to work with carriers that support eSIM.

Apart from those two main new features, Apple has added up to 70 new emojis in the new update and improved the camera performance. The camera app now gets the depth control option which was showcased during the iPhone event. Also, the update fixes the bug that caused the ‘beautygate’ issue with selfies. There are several other minor bug fixes and improvements that are available in the update as well.

macOS 10.14.1, watchOS 5.1, and tvOS 12.1

With the macOS 10.4.1 update, the Mac devices also get support for Group FaceTime and the new emojis. This is a minor update, but still weighs in at around 3.4GB. You will be notified when the update is available for your device. It also gets 52 security fixes, apart from the new features.

The watchOS 5.1 update seems to be a little buggy now, so we suggest you stay away from it for now. It will also add support for Group Facetime audio, and the new emojis. The new Apple Watch 4, after the update, will play a message for the responder if it detects a fall. The update weighs in a 133MB and brings along several bug fixes. The issue with the Walkie-Talkie app installation is fixed, and there are 14 more security fixes available.

Finally, those with the latest fourth-generation Apple TV are receiving a minor tvOS 12.1 update. According to the official changelog, this update brings performance and stability improvements. It also includes 11 security fixes. That’s about it. If you haven’t received the update yet, you can manually check for it under Settings > System > Software updates.

Apple is known to regularly provide software updates for its products, and it is doing a great job. The new updates will make the new iPhones and iPads even more desirable from before. You can either update right away, or wait a few days in case there are some bugs or issues with the new updates.
