Idea Cellular Launches New Rs. 159 Prepaid Recharge Plan: Offers 28GB Data, Unlimited Calling Benefits

As the Vodafone Idea merger makes progress, the tariff plans of the two former competitors are aligning. Yesterday, on November 01, Idea launched a new INR 159 recharge plan for prepaid customers, a move made by Vodafone quite a while ago. This is no surprise, as the two telecom majors are now in the process of bringing together their resources, including their staff and, naturally, their tariff plans. The new Idea prepaid recharge plan offers 28GB of data and unlimited calling benefits for a month, which is the same as the benefits of the Vodafone plan. However, there is a difference.

Idea Launches INR 159 Plan, But Not For All

Prepaid recharges come in ‘segmented’ and ‘open’ forms, and the new Idea plan follows the pattern. Open recharge plans are available for all customers of the telecom brand in the circles where the plan is launched, while segmented plans are for select customers only. Airtel has been launching its recharge plans in segmented form lately, and Idea has followed that route now, which is a bit odd, since Vodafone rolled out the same INR 159 plan in open type. There is no broad categorization as to who will benefit from the new recharge, so each customer has to log in to the app or website of Idea Cellular and check for oneself if the new INR 159 recharge plan is offered to them or not.

Benefits Of New Idea Recharge Plan For INR 159

Like the Vodafone plan, the Idea recharge plan worth INR 159 also comes with a validity of 28 days, and offers 28GB of 2G/3G/4G data, which translates into 1GB of data per day. You get a total of 100 SMS per day, and unlimited local, STD and national roaming calls. However, the caveat is that you get only 1,000 minutes of local, STD or national roaming calls per week, and 250 minutes per day. While that is not a bad offer, it is somewhat surprising, because Idea has VoLTE support in all the big cities in India. On the other hand, Vodafone has the same restriction under its INR 159 plan, so both companies are setting the same limits.

Vodafone had launched its equivalent plan back in August, and it also has other prepaid recharge plans that have not been offered by Idea yet. In the coming days, it is likely that all Vodafone and Idea recharge plans will be aligned, so that the Vodafone Idea merger can become fully functional.

Similar Plans By Airtel and Jio

The Vodafone recharge plan for INR 159 was seen as a move aimed at meeting the challenge of expansion by Airtel and Jio. Both these telecom brands were already offering recharge plans for INR 149 by the time Vodafone came out with its offer. Moreovoer, the unlimited calling offered by Airtel as well as Jio is actually unlimited, without any daily or weekly limits, and other benefits remain the same, such as 1GB data per day for 28 days, and 100 SMS per day. While Airtel’s plan is segmented to select users, just like Idea’s new plan, the recharge plans by Jio and Vodafone are open for all their customers.

It is rather clean that Jio is winning price wars, if not starting them in the first place, and Airtel seems to be tailing the new challenger that has gained ground quickly with its 4G and VoLTE services. The Vodafone Idea merger will take a lot of aggressive pricing and a better ecosystem to successfully challenge the two telecom giants. However, the market share of Vodafone Idea, combined, is greater than Airtel or Jio.
