Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus Gets Note 9’s Dockless DeX Feature Via Android 9 Pie Beta Update

Samsung first introduced DeX functionality with Galaxy S8 lineup. It enables users to connect their phone to a monitor to get Samsung’s desktop experience that is based on Android. The feature is claimed to be pretty smooth and allows multiple apps and windows to be opened simultaneously with a specially designed UI for a larger screen. With the launch of the Galaxy Note 9, Samsung introduced Samsung Experience 10 based on Android Pie Dockless DeX. And now, it is coming to the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.

Galaxy Note 9’s Dockless DeX feature comes to Galaxy S9, S9+

Samsung seems to have brought the Dockless DeX feature to the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ smartphones as found out by SamCentral Discord after testing the leaked Samsung Experience 10 beta for the devices. Check out the video below to see how Dockless DeX feature works with Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ users will be able to use the Dockless DeX feature with the help of an HDMI to USB Type-C cable. The first iteration of Samsung DeX that debuted with Galaxy S8 required Samsung DeX Pad or DeX Station; it included a small round-shaped dock that enabled users to connect an ethernet cable, HDMI cable and USB devices to it. Users could also connect a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard to use with it; all this allowed users to use their Samsung phone as a computer. The second iteration of the DeX Pad came with the launch of the Galaxy S9 lineup, which included USB ports and an HDMI port. This new version also acted as a trackpad and keyboard to keep the USB ports free for other devices.

With the launch of the Galaxy Note 9, Samsung transformed the DeX and made it all wireless. The company made the DeX feature available without the need of any external hardware unit. The latest iteration of Samsung DeX allows users to connect a monitor to their Samsung phone with the help of an HDMI to USB Type-C cable. And that’s it, just by connecting the phone to the monitor, the DeX interface is all ready to be used on the bigger screen. Additionally, users can use the screen of their phone to control the DeX, or they can connect a Bluetooth mouse or a keyboard. Although the new DeX seems to be better, it can only open up to 5 windows instead of 20 windows that were allowed on the previous iterations with DeX Pads.

Why Didn’t It Come Earlier on Galaxy S9, S9+?

Both the Samsung Galaxy S9+ and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 share the same set of hardware. However, it is the software that was barring the entry of Dockless DeX on the S9, S9+. The Android Pie-based Samsung Experience 10 brings several Galaxy Note 9 features to the S9 series. It seems to have enabled Dockless DeX for the S9, S9+.

For now, Samsung Experience 10 beta builds are available for the Snapdragon variants of both the phones. The company will soon be launching its official beta program that will allow users to test the latest build.
