IPL 2020: Swiggy and Zomato Receive Play Store Violation Notice from Google Over IPL-based Cashback Games

Swiggy and Zomato both the food delivery has received notices from Google for gamification and promotions which are associated with IPL matches. After Google’s notice both the companies have stopped all the cashback-games related to sports on their platform. According to Google, the food delivery apps were violating the policies related to sports betting of Play Store.

According to the report, these notices were sent to Swiggy and Zomato days after Google removed the popular Indian online payment app Paytm from Play Store. The search giant gave the same reason of policy violation for removing Paytm from the Play Store. Swiggy and Zomato were also promoting sports-betting by cashback and discount promos since the IPL 2020 began.

Gurugram-based Zomato confirmed that it has received a notice from Google. “We believe that the notice is unfair, but we are a small company and have already realigned our business strategy to comply with Google’s guidelines,” Inside Sport quoted company’s spokesperson. “We will be replacing Zomato Premier League with a more exciting program by this weekend.”

There are many companies which come with gamification features to hold the engagement of the customers during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2020). Zomato has introduced an in-app game feature called the Zomato Premier League that allows users to predict about the IPL matches and earn rewards. Swiggy, on the other hand, came up with Match Day Mania offers under which the company is offering up to 50% Off, earn Swiggy money, and cashback offers from Swiggy.

“There is a lack of clarity since Google Pay platform is also active and offers cashback,” the report quoted an official at one of the firms which received the notice from Google.

“We don’t allow online casinos or support any unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting. This includes if an app leads consumers to an external website that allows them to participate in paid tournaments to win real money or cash prizes, it is a violation of our policies,” Google said in a blog post.

The question for everyone is seeking answers is why Google is not directly banning the apps which are directly related to online sports betting, why it’s targeting the apps who are promoting and also providing rewards to the consumers.
