iOS 17: Which iPhones Will Get the New Update?
The upcoming iOS 17 update will be announced on June 5 at WWDC 23. Apple is likely to release the update after the iPhone 15 launch in September. Ahead of the official release timeline, it has been tipped that the iOS 17 update will be unavailable for two generations of iPhones which got iOS 16. According to MacRumors, the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X will not the upcoming iOS update.
The three iPhones were launched back in 2017 at the same event. However, the iPhone X was a special device for Apple as it marked the company’s 10th year since the first iPhone was launched in 2007. Apple introduced the iPhone X without the home button. Touch ID was replaced by Face ID, which was housed next to the front camera inside the wide notch at the top of the display.
Notably, if the leaked details are true, the iPhone X will be the first iPhone with a notch to not get a new iOS version since its launch. The iPhone XS, XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro series, iPhone 12 series, iPhone 12 Pro series, iPhone 13 series, iPhone 13 Pro series, iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro series will get the new update, if the leaked details are true.
Alongside the iPhones, a few iPad models will also not get the upcoming iPadOS 17 update. The report stated that the first-generation iPad Pro with a 9.7-inch display, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 1st generation and the iPad fifth-generation will not be eligible for the iPadOS 17 update.
Apple will announce the list of iPhones and iPads getting the new iOS and iPadOS update at WWDC 23. A recent report stated that iOS 17 will address several user-requested features. While the report did not reveal any details, it stated that Apple will offer some “nice to have” iOS features with the upcoming major update. “The goal of the software, codenamed “Dawn,” is to check off several of users’ most requested features,” according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
This is contrary to a previous report, which claimed that the update will focus more on stability and efficiency.
More details about the upcoming iOS update might surface in the coming days. Apple is expected to announce macOS 14, watchOS 10 and more at WWDC 23. The company might also unveil a new Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra chip and new MacBooks with an M3 chipset.
