JioPhone Users Consume 7GB Average Monthly Data Compared to Industry Average of 2GB Per Month: Report

With the introduction of low-cost smartphones via the Monsoon Hungama offer and irresistible data plans,  data consumption in India has hit an all-time high.

A new report suggests that the Jio phone is the best selling gadget ever since it’s launch and now has 25 million users. According to the Head of strategy and planning of Reliance Jio Infocomm, Mr Anshuman Thakur, an average user consumes 7GB data per month on an average.

Monthly Data Consumption:

The users of the telecom giant Jio consume about 10 GB data per month on an average and when compared to other telecom users in the industry, the average is about 2GB data. Ever since the launch of Reliance Jio, the data consumption has increased almost 8 folds and looks only to increase further. This has made Reliance, the world’s second largest telecom operator. The businesses of its competitors like Airtel, Idea and Vodafone have been affected big time and have incurred huge losses over the past two years.

Mr Thakur also said that one an average, a Jio user spends almost 5 hours a day on the phone and the low-cost tariffs have attracted more people towards data consumption and are finding value in the offering. The users are rediscovering new stuff on JioPhones and hence, are hooked on it for newer content. And the surprising part is that these figures are so high when apps like WhatsApp, Youtube and Facebook are not available to the users. Jio’s Mukesh Ambani has promised to introduce a new phone by 15th August with all these features available.

Sources say that Ambani targets the JioPhone users to increase to 100 million users in India.

Reliance Jio’s Monsoon Hungama Offer:

The users have been growing at a very fast pace since the launch of Jio‘s Monsoon Hungama offer where a user can get a Jio phone a Rs 501, in exchange for an old feature phone.

With the Jio Monsoon Hungama offer of Rs 501, the user can exchange any feature phone for a new phone and the amount will be refunded. The user will also e required to six buy coupons of Rs 99 per coupon that would enable him to use data for 6 months. Mr Thakur said “We want to ensure people just don’t buy the phone and keep, they should be using the phone to consume data,”

The consumers also do not mind spending more on data. The users are seen shifting to their Rs 153 plan that offers 1.5 GB data per day from the Rs 49 plan. The rest of the users are still subscribed to the nase plan of Rs 49.

Reliance Jio’s Speeds:

Ex CEO of iStream.com, Mr Radhakrishnana Ramachandran said that Reliance Jio has changed the way Indian consumers have been using data.

It has also been reported that the 4G download speed of Reliance Jio is more than double to that of Bharati Airtel and the download speed stood at 9.7 Mbps. This is higher than the 9.3 Mbps download speed that was recorded in April. This information is provided by TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) on MySpeed portal.
