Qualcomm Announces Quick Charge 3+ for Mid-range Smartphones, Delivers 0-50% Charge in Just 15 mins

Qualcomm’s Quick Charge technology is present on smartphones that are powered by the chipmaker’s chipsets. Currently, the highest standard of charging offered by the company is Quick Charge 4+ and it touts to juice up a phone from 0-50 percent in just 15 minutes. The new Quick charge 3+ also offers similar charging standards and is said to be an upgrade for the devices currently on Quick Charge 2.0 or 3.0 standard. Many OEMs modify Qualcomm’s charging standard to offer even more improved wired charging.

The main objective of Quick Charge 3+ is to bring a faster-wired charging experience for lower-priced and mid-range phones. As mentioned above, QC 3+ also touts a charge of 50 percent in 15 minutes. The company claims this is a 35 percent jump from the previous charging standard. Qualcomm says that QC 3+ will keep the device cooler by 9°C while charging. The charging solution is supported on standard USB Type-A to USB Type-C cables. It is also important to note here that the data provided by Qualcomm are in reference to a single IC and an “appropriate board/battery design.”

QC 3+ also happens to be backward compatible with older Quick Charge versions. This means that accessories designed for QC3+ will also work on previous versions. At present, the technology is supported by the new mid-range Qualcomm chipsets, Snapdragon 765, and 765G. However, more upcoming chipsets from the company this year will also be adding this new charging standard.

Two new PMICs: SMB1395 and SMB1396 have support for QC 3+ so OEMs will not have to use an Over Voltage Protection (OVP) chip. As per reports, the Mi 10 Lite Zoom will be the first phone to make use of QC 3+ and QC 4+ simultaneously. The SMB1396 supports both wired and wireless charging so we can expect it to be used on higher-end mid-range devices. Expect a lot more devices to support QC3+ charging solution this year.
