Qualcomm had announced the Snapdragon 865 chipset successor, the Snapdragon 888 back in December 2020. The Snapdragon 888 SoC is equipped with a Snapdragon X60 5G Modem-RF system and is manufactured using a 5nm process. This flagship chipset comes with 6th gen AI Engine and is paired with Adreno 660 GPU, offering 35% faster performance compared to the previous generation model. Currently, this chipset is being flagship Xiaomi, OnePlus, Vivo, Realme flagship smartphones. Now, it is said that the US-based chipset giant is prepping up for the launch of the Snapdragon 888 successor in the form of Snapdragon 888 “Pro” SoC if we go by the newly revealed information by the Weibo tipster.
Qualcomm Is Testing Snapdragon 888 Pro
A well-known Weibo blogger Digital Chat Station has mentioned in its Weibo post that Qualcomm is currently testing the Snapdragon 888 Pro chipset. This enhanced version is likely to debut in the third quarter of 2021. It is also said that the upcoming Snapdragon 888 Pro will remain exclusive to China-based smartphone makers. This means that devices with this new SoC will be launched in China only, as per Digital Chat Station. Apart from these details, the tipster even hints that no new Snapdragon 700 series SoCs will make a debut this year. This could also mean that the Snapdragon 780G will be the flagship SoCs in the Snapdragon 700 lineup until this year.
As of now, the specifications and features of this new rumoured SoC isn’t known. However, we can expect the Snapdragon 888 Pro chipset to offer a higher clock speed compared to the current Snapdragon 888 processor. In one way, the Snapdragon 888 Pro can be real, as in the past we had seen the company launching the enhanced version of the Snapdragon 855, the Snapdragon 855 Plus primarily targeted at gamers, offering GPU improvements.
The Snapdragon 855 Plus offered a 2.96GHz clock speed boost, compared to that of 2.84GHz speed on the base Snapdragon 855 variant. While both these SoCs are being made using a 7nm process, we do see a 15% boost in GPU rendering performance for the Snapdragon 855 Plus.
As the days pass, we should get to learn more details about the Snapdragon 888 Pro if it appears in the Geekbench or AnTuTu benchmark in the upcoming few weeks. What are your thoughts about the new Snapdragon 888 Pro SoC? Do let us know in the comments below.
