MediaTek Dimensity 1200 and Dimensity 1100 5G SoC Announced, Expected to Debut in Redmi K40 Series

MediaTek unveiled the Dimensity 1200 and Dimensity 1100 next-gen chipsets fabbed on a 6nm process, and featuring the latest ARM-Cortex A78 cores. The two chipsets are based on the same underlying architecture featuring similar CPU and GPU IP, but should target different smartphone segments. The Dimensity lineup was already quite strong and just started to make its way to India with the launch of the Reno5 Pro which features the Dimensity 1000+ SoC. And there’s already news about a Redmi gaming smartphone that will be powered by the new flagship SoC.

The Dimensity 1200 is the flagship here, while the Dimensity 1100 comes as the next in command. The major difference between the two is that the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 makes use of a tri-cluster CPU architecture, much like the Snapdragon 8-series flagships. But only here, MediaTek employs ARM-Cortex A78 cores instead of the more powerful ARM Cortex-X1 prime core that the Snapdragon 888 uses. Nevertheless, the 1+3+4 configuration is a first for the company. The primary Cortex-A78 core is clocked at up to 3.0GHz while the other three Cortex-A78 performance cores are clocked at 2.6GHz. There are four power efficient Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.0GHz as well.

The Dimensity 1100 relies on the old 4+4 CPU configuration, where all four Cortex-A78 cores are clocked at 2.6GHz while the four Cortex-A55 cores are clocked at 2.0GHz. Without the prime core, the Dimensity 1100 feels ever so slightly underpowered as compared to the Dimensity 1200, but owing to the generational advantage of using newer cores and smaller manufacturing process, both chipsets are expected to offer higher IPC as compared to the Dimensity 1000+.

MediaTek claimed the overall CPU performance of the Dimensity 1200 is 22 per cent better while being 25 per cent more power efficient over previous generation.

As for the other elements of the SoC, both the Dimensity 1200 and 1100 feature a 9-core Mali-G77 GPU with support for video acceleration for AV1 codecs. Furthermore, the Dimensity 1200 becomes the chipset with the highest screen refresh rate support of 168Hz among all mobile SoCs, while a 5-core ISP supports camera sensors up to 200 megapixels. The ISP can merge three exposures into a single frame while shooting 4K videos, with MediaTek claiming a 40 per cent boost in dynamic range.

The Dimensity 1100 can support displays up to 144Hz and camera sensors up to 108MP. MediaTek claimed a 20 per cent speed in processing low-light shots with a dedicated night mode for panoramas.

Both chipsets also feature MediaTek’s M7 5G chip with support for NSA and SA sub-6GHz 5G network with a maximum download throughput of 4.7Gbps.

MediaTek Dimensity 1200 and 1100 coming soon to a smartphone near you

MediaTek said the first batch of smartphones powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 and 1100 will launch around the end of March and beginning of April. Several OEMs including Vivo, OPPO, Xiaomi and Redmi has confirmed to be working on devices powered by the flagship chipsets. A Redmi gaming smartphone possibly under the Redmi K40 Series is already confirmed to be powered by the D1200 SoC.
