Nokia Working on a New Feature Phone Codenamed ‘Gemini’ with Modular Design: Report

Update: As it turns out, this could very well have been a part of an April Fools joke. Though a bit odd, there have been several reports of such jokes happening on April 1.

Original story follows…

HMD Global unveiled a bunch of Nokia smartphones last month, including the likes of its first-ever 5G smartphone dubbed the Nokia 8.3 5G. Alongside the flagship, the brand also launched the mid-range Nokia 5.3, the entry level Nokia 1.3, and the Nokia 5310 Xpress Music feature phone. Speaking of feature phones, they are still a very crucial niche and are running strong even after the fact that smartphones have dominated the spectrum.

Nokia certainly realizes that fact and has constantly been pushing new feature phones to fill the gap between a traditional phone and a smartphone. The latest edition turns out to be a feature phone, which is modular. Yes, you heard it right. As per the report that we have received, Nokia is allegedly working on launching a new modular phone, which comes with the codename ‘Gemini’. Take a look at this new development and find out what the aforementioned Nokia Gemini modular phone has in store for us.

Nokia ‘Gemini’ Could be the Company’s Upcoming Modular Phone

As per a report by NokiaMob, Nokia Mobile is working on developing a new phone with the code name Gemini. The source has shared some alleged leaked renders of the phone.

As seen in the render images, the Nokia Gemini has a modular design, which includes two screens, connected with a bridge that apparently serves as a battery and a holder for the two modules. As per the source, the bottom module of the Nokia Gemini would be used as keyboard, as well as a trackpad for UI navigation, whereas the upper module will be reserved for displaying content that we consume on our regular devices. The leaked render image also double checks the assumption, as the lower module is comparatively smaller than the upper counterpart.

Sadly, the source has no intel surrounding the OS which will be used with this modular phone. That being said, it speculates that the OS could be Google’s take on providing Android for low-end devices. So, we can expect the Nokia Gemini to ship with a forked version of Android, if at all it sees the light of the day. Speaking of, the Nokia Gemini is said to be in the late stages of development and is planned to be showcased during next year’s Mobile World Congress 2021.

We can only hope and expect such a concept to make its way through the final cut and it would be a bummer if Nokia kills the device. Nokia Mobile has had the history of doing so in the past as well, leading us skeptical.
