Huawei tops the DxOMark mobile ranking with the P20 Pro with a score that saw a device breach the 100 figure for the first time. Huawei attributes the performance of the P20 Pro to its Master AI feature that can automatically detect scenes and adjust the camera settings accordingly. However, it seems the latest update for the Huawei P20 Pro disables this feature by default.
Huawei’s latest update for the P20 Pro, build number CLT-L29 8.1.9.156(C432), notes that Master AI is now disabled by default, although it can be re-enabled just as easily. The 525MB update includes, in the changelog, details of the change for Master AI as well as the inclusion of the August 2018 security patch.

Master AI is one of the flagship features of the P20 Pro that can account for landscapes, portraits, and even recognize food and animals to automatically adjust the camera settings to achieve the best possible picture.
Android Planet reached out to Huawei Netherlands for a comment on why one of the most powerful features of the Huawei P20 Pro is now disabled by default. The response received from a spokesperson (translated in English here) was: “When developing Huawei products and the software, the user experience comes first and we also pay attention to signals and feedback from our users. The feedback on this type of business teaches us how users respond to this and whether it increases the user-friendliness of the P20 Pro. ”
It would appear that the general consensus from users would be that the Master AI feature was producing less than ideal results or perhaps was creating too much confusion for users. It would seem that the Huawei opinion would be to listen to user feedback and turn off the feature by default and allow those who would prefer to use the option to just turn it back on.
The focus on AI is a massive feature of the P20 Pro and forms the basis for many Huawei taglines, so it will be interesting to see if this is now disabled by default, whether Huawei change their marketing approach.
