If you have a broken Pixel or Pixel 2, then you’ll no longer have to worry about finding a repairer you trust to fix your device as Google has opened its own repair center. Customers who have had an unfortunate accident with their devices can now mail in their broken Pixel or Pixel 2 for Google to repair the device.
Previously if sent the device to Google for repair, the company would use a third-party called uBreakiFix to resolve issues with broken handsets. This will no longer be the case as Google looks to bring the repair of broken handsets in-house by opening up its own repair centers across the U.S. The Google Store’s Repair Center is currently available for use by all U.S.-based customers who need repair work done on a Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, or Pixel 2 XL that is out of warranty.
To kick off the process, you need to enter the IMEI into the online portal that will verify your device is a supported Pixel device. After confirming the exact Pixel model, you’ll select what type of repair you would like.
Once you’ve selected the damage that applies, you can then choose to either send the device to Google using your own shipping method or wait several days for the company to send you out shipping materials. The third option is to take your device into a third-party shop.
Following this step and agreeing to the various terms, you’ll then be given a repair cost. This cost will depend on what is wrong with your device, but a broken screen, for example, will set you back some $200.
It goes without saying that your device will be wiped when sent to Google so be sure you make a sufficient back up of any data that is held locally that you want to keep.
Sure the service appears expensive, but the device is repaired directly by Google, so you have the piece of mind the parts will be genuine and arguably top quality as opposed to any corner-shop that may be able to do it at a lower cost.
Let us know your comments below – would you use Google’s service or seek your own repair methods?
