Sony recently debuted its latest flagship smartphone at the IFA trade-show in Berlin. It’s called the Sony Xperia XZ3. The all-new premium device from the Japanese OEM offers a lot of features, but can it better the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and the Huawei P20 Pro? Well, let’s find out!
Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs Sony Xperia XZ3 vs Huawei P20 Pro: Design, Display
All three smartphone comes with a drastically different design language. That said, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and the Huawei P20 Pro are quite a looker. Both smartphones boast an impeccable screen-to-body ratio, and a come with an all-glass design. The Huawei P20 Pro, additionally, comes with a gradient design that makes it look rather trendy. It also the slimmest among the three at just 7.8mm.
Despite having a thick profile and candy bar like design, the Sony Xperia XZ3 makes up for its in terms of its display. It, along with the Galaxy Note 9 come with a Quad HD+ panel. The Huawei P20 Pro, on the other hand, features a 6.1-inch Full HD+ (2,240 x 1,080p) Super AMOLED display. It’s, however, worth noting that the Samsung phablet comes with the largest display at 6.4 inches. The Xperia XZ3 lies in between with 6.0-inch QHD+ P-OLED Triluminous display. Moreover, all three flagships come with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for protection.

The Sony Xperia XZ3 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 share a similar Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor, which apparently is the latest and great chip from Qualcomm. On the other hand, the Huawei P20 Pro comes with an in-house developed Kirin 970 octa-core chipset.
Some variants of the Galaxy Note 9 (in select markets) also come with Exynos 9810 octa-core processor. While all three devices are expected to deliver impeccable performance, expect slight better gaming experience on the Galaxy Note 9 and the Sony Xperia XZ3 due to the Adreno 630 GPU.
Additionally, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and the Huawei P20 Pro both come with an 8GB RAM variant. The Xperia XZ3, however, comes with only 4GB or 6GB RAM variants. The Galaxy phablet also comes with 512GB of internal storage.

The Huawei P20 Pro has the most striking camera setup among the three. While the other two devices come with dual rear camera setup, the Huawei features a three discrete sensors working in tandem. It was, in fact, the first phone to debut with a triple camera setup. The unit comprises a 40MP f/1.8 primary, 20MP f/1.6 black-white, and an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto sensor. All three sensors come with a PDAF and OIS. The third one even boasts a 3X optical zoom. The selfie department of the Huawei P20 Pro, on the other hand, is manned by a Leica backed 24MP f/2.0 selfie snapper.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and the Sony Xperia XZ3 also come with pretty powerful shooters, both front, and rear. The former packs a dual rear camera setup, whereas the latter features a single 19MP f/2.0 sensor with PDAF and Laser Autofocus. The rear camera on the Galaxy Note 9 is made up of a 12MP f/1.5 primary and a 12MP f/2.4 secondary telephoto sensor. Alongside it features OIS and 2X optical zoom.

Both the Samsung Galaxy ad the Huawei P20 Pro comes with a 4,000mAH battery. This would help them easily last through a day of usage. The Huawei P20 Pro is, however, believed to offer a longer battery life as compared to the Note 9, all thanks to its lighter in-house developed silicon. On the contrary, the Xperia XZ3 features a 3,300mAh battery.
The Sony Xperia XZ3 has a definite edge over the other two in terms of software. It is one of the few smartphones that run on Android Pie 9.0 out of the box. The Samsung and the Huawei still run on Android Oreo 8.0.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and the Huawei P20 Pro are priced very similar at Rs 67,900 and Rs 64,999 respectively. Amazon is, however, offering a limited period discount on the Galaxy Note 9 which results in a selling price of Rs 63,900. The Sony Xperia XZ3, on other hand, is yet to make its way to India, but expect it to be priced similarly.

Clearly, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and the Huawei P20 Pro edges out the Sony Xperia XZ3 by a significant margin. That said, it’s much harder to choose between the Samsung and the Huawei, and it ultimately boils down to personal preference. Either of the devices offers some great specs at this price point.
