Google Pay Now Allows Paying For Uber Rides in India, Offers Up to Rs.1,000 Cashback; Here’s How

Google has recently partnered with Uber in India. And this has resulted in Google Pay enabling Uber as a payee on its payment app. This means that now a user in India can use Google Pay to pay for all his/her Uber rides. As an introductory offer the cashback of up to Rs.1,000 is being offered by Google in case the rider uses Google’s payment app to pay for 10 of his/her Uber rides.

Google and Uber have recently formed an alliance in India to provide the Indian Uber rider with more payment options. Now the user gets one more payment gateway option in Google Pay besides cash, card, and Paytm, while booking an Uber. The Android Uber app has already installed the integration. Every month, more than 22 million Indians use Google Pay for making a payment. Now paying for an Uber has been added to the list as well.

Google with Uber: The Indian Connection

Google’s payment platform got rebranded from Google Tez to Google Pay last month, in August. With this latest move, the payment app has just expanded its user base. This also stands Google Pay in direct competition with Paytm which up until now was the only third-party digital wallet attached with Uber. It was one of the payment options offered by Uber in India to pay for one’s Uber ride, besides cash and card.

Last month Google had held the 2018 edition of their Google for India event. The multinational tech giant revealed in the event that over 22 million Indian users use Google Pay monthly. While, more than 1.2 million small business owners have enabled Google Pay as their primary mobile payment gateway.

How to Use Google Pay to Pay for Uber?

To make payment for the Uber ride using Google Pay the user needs to simply add Google Pay as a payment option in the Uber app. For that the user needs to first click on the menu on the top left corner of the smartphone screen. From the drop down menu choose the Payment option. Select the Add Payment Method from the toggle. Select Google Pay as the option of choice. When prompted, enter the UPI ID unique to the Google Pay customers.

As of now, Google Pay is enabled for only Android users of the Uber app. That is to say, currently only Android device holders can use Google Pay as a payment method to pay for their Uber ride. Google hasn’t made any comments regarding its plans to expand the service to other platforms. It is unclear how soon the integration of Google Pay will happen with other OS, including the iOS.

Google’s Plans for India

In India, Google rebranded Google Tez as Google Pay. Google also announced its plans to expand the scope of Google Pay in India. By this Diwali, Google is looking to integrate Google Pay to 15,000 retail stores across the country.

The company is on the brink of forming partnerships with HDFC, Federal Bank, ICICI, and Kotak Mahindra to provide pre-approved loans to its users. Google Pay will be acting as an intermediary between the respective bank’s customers and the bank for the dispersal of the pre-approved loans.

Since Google Pay was launched in India last year as Google Tez, the payment portal has enabled 750 million transactions. Since the payment gateway’s introduction in September 2017 their per month BHIM UPI has has gone up 14 times. FreshMenu, BookMyShow, redBus, and Goibibo, have Google Pay as a payment option.

February saw Google enabling payment of utility bills through its payment app. Xiaomi too has added Google Pay as a payment mode in its official site Mi.com and MiStore app.
