Apple Sued By MPH Technologies For Infringing On Encryption Tech Patents

Over the years Apple has found itself a part of many lawsuits. Qualcomm and Apple have never really hit it off and have taken their feud all the way into 2018. Apple is being sued for leaking chip information to Qualcomm’s rival, Intel. Well, that’s not all for Apple as it dragged into yet another lawsuit. MPH Technologies, a Finnish Company, is laying down the law on Apple for features like iMessage and FaceTime which allegedly infringe on the patent rights of the company. The company did try to license the patents to Apple before in 2017 and 2017 but that offer fell on deaf ears.

MPH Technologies sues Apple for Infringing on its Patents

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Supposedly, Apple has infringed on eight of its patents. It seems like Apple has unlawfully used tech which is crucial for the functioning of certain of its apps. The MPH patents relate to secure communication technologies which Apple uses in its iMessage and FaceTime app. Well, that’s not all, the company claims that Apple is using its technology for MDM solutions among enterprise and educational customers and in features such as Handoff, Universal Clipboard, iPhone Cellular Call Relay, and iPhone Text Messaging forwarding.

MPH has been rather patient and lenient as it emailed Apple several times regarding the infringement in 2016. The company even warned Apple when a new patent came out which Apple was infringing on. However, Apple’s response was quite uncooperative, saying that it did not:

“believe a license is required, as the asserted patents are not infringed and/or invalid as MPH appears to be interpreting the claims.”

During the back and forth discussions which took place in 2017, Apple indicated that it would be preparing an analysis absolving itself of any blame and charges. However, till date, nothing of the sort has been submitted. In fact, this is what made MPH Technologies realise that nothing would be settled if it didn’t take Apple to the courtroom. Do you think Apple has finally bitten off more than it can actually chew? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment.
