WikiLeaks has always enjoyed the editing skills and mentorship of its editor-in-chief, Julian Assange. Unfortunately, he is now ghost from the days bygone. Circumstances have forced him to step down from his current position. His group claims that his departure has been “due to the extraordinary circumstances” which have led him to cut off communication with anyone but his lawyers. As his place, a new member has been recruited to the team. Kristinn Hrafnsson, an Icelandic journalist, has taken his place. However, he isn’t really new to the website considering he served WikiLeaks as its spokesperson from 2010-2016.
Julian Assange: Confined to a Life Without Internet
So, what exactly is keeping Assange away? Well, his internet access has been cut off since Jan and he has been taking refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in the U.K. He seems to be in quite a soup as he may face charges for alleged sexual assault. However, the extent to which this is true is definitely debatable. Ever since 2012, he has been living in the Ecuadorian embassy. Somehow, he managed to serve his duties at WikiLeaks from there. Remember the stolen emails from Hillary Clinton’s campaign which made its way on the internet during the 2016 Presidential elections? Well, that’s all was his doing! Unfortunately, in March this year, Ecuador had enough of his antics and claimed that he violated an agreement which is unforgivable.

Owing to this, signal jammers had been installed ensuring that he was cut off from the internet in any and every way possible. He is now almost being held in captivity with no access to any human interaction except that which goes on with his lawyers. While he will continue to serve as the website’s publisher, it’s more of an honorary title. This is definitely a great setback to the website as Assange had been a critical part of the team, releasing content which made the website what it is today! On the bright side, Kristinn Hrafnsson seems more than ready to fill in his shoes, saying:
“welcome[s] the responsibility to secure the continuation of the important work based on WikiLeaks ideals.”
